10 Ways to Make Money Online in Sri Lanka for Free


In one of my previous posts about making money online in Sri Lanka I talked about different methods you can use to make money online and some things you should avoid at all cost. However lots of people have mailed me asking for specific ways to make money online for free. So in this article I’ll list down specific websites that you can start making money for free.
You don’t have to pay anything to join these sites. All you need is time and commitment. They probably wont make you rich, but will definitely provide you with some nice side income.

1/ Creating Hubs , Squidoo Lenses

If you’re good at writing then this is a great way to make money online. You sign up for these website and they’ll provide you with all the tools and resources to create awesome looking webpages. These webpages will have advertisements on them and you’ll get a percentage of money earned from those advertisements. It’s free so just signup and give it a try.

2/ Sell Photos Online

Selling photos is another great way to make money online. If you’re already into photography then this could be a great way to make some extra income. All those photos are just lying there on Facebook anyway, so no harm in uploading them to a photo selling site and making some extra cash. Most of my friends use Shutterstock and they’d have some amazing success through them.

3/ Blogging

Blogging is another things you can do if you have the knack for writing. It’s similar to HubPages and Squidoo but the difference is you don’t have to share the profit. You can use a free blogging platform like Blogger or WordPress to create a blog.
Although you don’t have to share the revenue you’ll find it harder to rank in search engines using your own blog. Still in the long run it will pay off. If you’re serious about making money online its very important to have your own blog. You can succeed without a blog, but you’ll have a better chance with a blog.
  • Read the articles about niche blogging with Keyword Academy and SEO and Affiliate marketing for your blog.
  • At least write five article with one of the free services mentioned above to find out whether you have the commitment required for blogging.
  • If you already have a blog contact me to discuss about various ways to make money from your blog. 

    4/ Affiliate marketing

    In affiliate marketing you act as the middle man. You sell a companies products or services to consumers and the company pays you a commission for every successful sale. For a comprehensive take on affiliate marketing check out this wiki article.
    There are many products and services that has affiliate programs. Although not used extensively some Sri Lankan companies also have affiliate programs. This is a great way to make money online for free if you find the right product in the right niche.
    If you have a hard time finding a product then consider websites like ClickBank andCommission Junction that have lots of affiliate programs in one central place.

    5/ Doing Freelance work

    If you have a marketable skill then this is a great way to make money online. I know freelancers from Sri Lanka who earn well over Rs. 200,000 by doing freelance work. Even I do freelance work as a SEO and make good money in the process.
    Because labor is expensive in countries like USA and Europe there is a good demand for good freelancers from Sri Lanka. There are many sites for freelancers that are absolutely free to sign up. Check out the article to learn more about the process.

    6/ Data Entry Jobs

    My article about data entry jobs in SL gets lots of traffic so I know this is a topic most people are interested. You wont get rich by doing data entry jobs but still if you find the right job you can make a decent income.

    7/ PTC programs

    PTC stands for paid to click and this is not the best way to build a sustainable income but I understand that some of you just want to earn some quick cash. These programs require you to log in for like 10-15 minutes everyday and clicking on ads and reading them. If you want to be really successful at this then you need to get lots of referrals because you earn a part of what your referrals earn as well. You can earn a decent amount if you manage to get enough referrals.

    9/ Doing Paid surveys

    Online surveys are a very legitimate method to make money online but the problem is most of these paid surveys are targeted towards US and Canadian citizens. It is very hard to find worldwide surveys where Sri Lankans can participate in. These programs do have referral programs so as with most things in making money online, if you can get enough referrals you have a chance of making a decent income.

    10/ Buying and selling domains

    This is another good way to make money online but you need to have some knowledge about domain valuation etc to make money through this method. There are few Sri Lankans who are doing it but if you are new to making money online then it is better if you focus on the other things mentioned above.
    Listed above are some good ways to make money online in Sri Lanka, if you know some other good way to make money online in Sri Lanka please mention in the comments section so I can consider adding it in the list. Taking action is the most important thing needed to make money online, follow the steps mentioned in the article and you have a good chance of making money online.

    • Although you can make money from the sites mentioned above they are a good place to improve your writing skill as well. You can write an article and ask people to critique it and improve yourself upon the feedback. HubPages, Squidoo etc have helpful communities that give you great advice and they helped me in improving my writing skills.

  2. This indeed a great list of options for a newbie to start earning online. You are quit correct to put the article publishing platforms at top for a beginner since the writer doesn’t have to worry about the technical stuff. But how do you feel the recent algorithm change in Google search engine where the platforms like hubpages are said to be highly affected. What is the effect from your personal experience. Had it decrease the traffic to your lenses and hubs.
    Furthermore as some have pointed out do you think the value of backlinks has decreased, specially when they are coming from content farms.

    • This is a very good question but the thing to remember here is that this is an algorithm change, not a site wide penalty. None of my hubs and lenses were effected in this change so I can assure you that just because it is a Squidoo lens doesn’t mean it has dropped in rankings. But as a whole those sited have lost traffic and that is probably because articles targeted towards long tail and niches that require authority ( health, finance, legal ) got hit a bit. Even in HubPages and Squidoo if you are writing quality unique and useful article you will succeed because in the end what Google wants is to deliver the best result for the search.
      About the decrease of the value of the back link I can’t say for sure since I haven’t seeing any negative result. Relying on HubPages, Squidoo alone for back links is anyway not a good strategy. Back links from multiple sources are way more powerful than 100 back links from the same source. And I wouldn’t call HubPages and Squidoo content farms, there are some super quality articles in there :-) .

Even though I’m not from Sri-Lanka, I must admit I keep forgetting about Squidoo,and Hub-Pages. I also thought your opinion on the new algorithm Google has issued was spot on. Good post. jj

    • Most method here can be tried by anyone and I think people from other countries can have better luck with paid surveys etc as well. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  11. I am really impressed about your info. Already i am trying to doing some paid survey program. But its very difficult to know how far are they real? What about Next-Gen paid survey? are they real? i must need to pay 49 dollars for the registration. But its ok if they are real. can u pls help me to find out real survey program? Thanx!     • Hi Anne, There are alternative services like Skrill, AlertPay etc which you can use to receive funds. Some of the service mentioned here do support those payments systems.
